Carey Olsen's Denis Olarou raises more than US$3,500 for heart charities with solo marathon effort

Carey Olsen's Denis Olarou has raised more than US$3,500 for two cardiovascular health charities after completing a solo marathon from East End to George Town in the Cayman Islands on the day he was supposed to be running in the Moscow Marathon.

Ahead of World Heart Day 2020 on 29 September, Denis took on the 42.2km challenge to raise money for Cayman Heart Fund in the Cayman Islands and Rusfond in his native Russia. Denis managed to raise more than US$1,700 individually, with Carey Olsen's Cayman Islands partners matching the amount.

Denis, who completed the run in 5 hours and 30 minutes, said the motivation for his challenge originally came when he had to abandon his planned work trip to Moscow (during which he intended to combine business with pleasure by taking part in his second Moscow Marathon) because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"I completed the 2019 Moscow Marathon in 3 hours and 57 minutes in driving wind and freezing rain and absolutely loved it," said Denis.

"However, when it became obvious I wasn't going to be able to go to Moscow to take part again this year, I decided to run a 'virtual' Moscow Marathon in Grand Cayman instead, while fundraising for great causes.

"Completing a marathon in tropical heat and humidity while carrying all my own water and gear was a humbling experience that tested me to the limit. Great support from friends and colleagues along the route and at the finish drove me on and got me over the line. I am grateful to all those who donated or raised awareness through sharing and liking my social media posts. I am also delighted that Carey Olsen decided to match the donations received."

Cayman Heart Fund will use its share of the money raised by Denis to fund the donation of free defibrillator kits to non-commercial organisations in the Cayman Islands. Rusfond will use its share of the money raised to help fund heart surgery for Russian children whose causes they promote.
