Chambers Global recognises Carey Olsen’s BVI dispute resolution team
Carey Olsen’s BVI practice has been highlighted in the 2017 Chambers Global Ranking Guide, with the dispute resolution team being promoted in the rankings.
The guide recognises the team’s growing reputation among market sources and the firm was cited by several peers as a sound choice for conflict work. It notes the team’s assured handling of major shareholder disputes, trust litigation, professional negligence and contractual claims. The team was recognised for its work acting for KPMG as the receivers for various O’Donnell family companies in a dispute relating to control of a major commercial property in London, valued at more than $150 million. Partner and head of the dispute resolution department Ben Mays was featured as a notable practitioner for his work with clients on a range of BVI dispute matters including shareholder disputes and major cross-border insolvencies. Sources described him as ‘very impressive’ and ‘an outstanding strategic thinker with a great tactical mind’ who is well established in the market. In addition, on the corporate side, BVI managing partner Clinton Hempel was singled out as a leading lawyer for his ‘attention to detail’ and was described by clients as ‘very helpful’ and ‘proactive’. The guide highlighted his substantial BVI experience advising on a range of corporate transactions and his expertise relating to deals originating in emerging markets, most notably South Africa. Mr Mays said: “This recognition from Chambers Global reflects the continued success of our BVI dispute resolution team. To be promoted up the rankings demonstrates the reputation we have established in the local legal market and is testament to the quality of work and clients who instruct us. ”
