High praise for Carey Olsen in 2019 edition of Chambers High Net Worth
Carey Olsen has secured a series of top rankings in the 2019 edition of the Chambers and Partners High Net Worth (HNW) guide, including two Band 1 practitioner statuses for partners Keith Robinson (Bermuda) and Russell Clark (Guernsey).
Carey Olsen Bermuda partner Keith Robinson, who is head of the firm's trusts and private wealth practice, is one of only two lawyers in Bermuda to be ranked in Band 1. He is described in Chambers HNW as 'Mr Trust Litigation in Bermuda' and 'at the top of everyone's list when you want an effective litigator in Bermuda'. Another market insider praised Keith's ability to 'play a strategic chess game to get the right result for clients. He is totally unflappable'.
Russell Clark, managing partner and head of the trusts and private wealth group in Guernsey, is the only lawyer in Guernsey to attain a Band 1 ranking. Described by sources as 'an exceptional lawyer who is very, very smart', Russell is also 'known as the top trust lawyer on the island' and someone who has a 'rare ability to advise on the whole panoply of Guernsey law'.
In addition, Carey Olsen was the only law firm to achieve Band 1 status in Guernsey, where it is recognised by market commentators for the 'strength and depth in its private client department' and as 'the first name we think of for trust and fiduciary providers from the private client side. We see them as the best'.
The firm's Jersey office attained Band 2 status and is praised by sources for being 'very thorough and always well prepared; they anticipate things before they happen'. Another source noted how 'for HNW clients, they cover a lot of bases – they put their clients first and are very responsive'.
Carey Olsen's fast growing trusts and private wealth practices in Bermuda (Band 2) and the Cayman Islands (Band 3) are also ranked for the first time. Carey Olsen Bermuda is noted as 'a real emerging force' and praised for attracting 'some really talented people'. One onshore lawyer remarked: 'they're flying – they have a lot of work'. Carey Olsen's Cayman Islands office is noted for its 'fantastic litigation presence' and for having 'brilliant lawyers who are very knowledgeable. They have in-depth understanding of the details of trust law in the Cayman Islands'.
In total, nine Carey Olsen lawyers have been recognised in the trusts and private client practitioner tables covering Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey.
Ashley Fife, counsel in the Bermuda trusts and private wealth team, is ranked as an 'Up and Coming' practitioner and described as 'excellent', 'sharp and very responsive' and someone with 'very good international experience'.
In the Cayman Islands, Bernadette Carey, partner and head of the trusts and private wealth practice, is ranked as an 'Up and Coming' practitioner. Describing Bernadette, one market insider said: 'She is very proactive in her approach and looks at issues from all angles. Her perspective on both contentious and non-contentious matters is very beneficial'. Counsel Graham Stoute is ranked in Band 3 and regarded as 'friendly and approachable while having detailed technical knowledge. A fellow practitioner praises him, saying: 'He has a big brain and can think outside the box'.
Guernsey partner Konrad Friedlaender is ranked in Band 2 and commended for his 'wide range of legal expertise' and 'prominent reputation in Guernsey'. Patricia Montgomery, counsel in the Guernsey trusts and private wealth group, is ranked as an 'Up and Coming' practitioner and praised for being 'phenomenally productive' and 'technically very good'.
Jersey's head of the trust and private wealth practice, Siobhan Riley, is ranked in Band 2, while fellow Jersey partner Alexa Saunders is ranked as 'Up and Coming'. Siobhan is considered as 'one of the leading names for trust work on the island' and as someone with 'a fantastic depth of knowledge'. Chambers HNW interviewees described Alexa as 'very bright' and 'mutually respected by advisers and clients – she is pleasant, sensible and really good to deal with'.
