Matthew is counsel in the dispute resolution and litigation team at Carey Olsen in Bermuda. His practice focuses primarily on litigation and arbitration in the corporate and commercial context. He is also a member of the firm's shareholder activism and takeover defence team, which advises both shareholders and companies on activist campaigns and shareholder disputes.

Matthew has experience litigating a wide variety of commercial disputes, as well as securing injunctions and other orders protecting his client's business interests. He often advises clients in relation to contract, construction, insurance, debt, civil fraud, corporate governance, insolvency and winding up, and shareholder activism matters. 

Examples of Matthew's recent experience includes acting for clients with respect to shareholder oppression/unfair prejudice claims, the resolution of company beneficial ownership issues, common law claims related to the exclusion of directors from a company's board of directors, and legal strategy related to activist investor engagements with public companies.

Matthew has appeared before the Bermuda Supreme Court, the Bermuda Court of Appeal, and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

Career

Matthew was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in Alberta, Canada in 2018 and in Bermuda in 2025.

Prior to joining Carey Olsen as an associate in 2024, Matthew worked as a litigation associate in the Calgary office of one of Canada's largest law firms, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. During that time, Matthew completed a secondment as in-house litigation counsel at a large publicly traded Canadian oil and gas company in Calgary. 

Matthew received his Juris Doctor (with distinction) from the University of Alberta. After graduating, he completed a judicial clerkship at the Court of King's Bench in Calgary. Matthew also received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Arts from the University of Western Ontario.
