We have an exciting opportunity for a Group Head of Business Development to join Carey Olsen. This is a newly created strategic role, where you will build on the firm's strategy, co-create and take ownership of the firm's global business development strategy that will drive continued growth in existing and new markets, sectors and practice areas. You will lead the operational delivery and execution of the business development strategy across all of the firm's offices and practice areas, helping to achieve the firm's growth objectives.
This is a global role working closely with the senior leadership team, BD Committee, key business development partners and wider BD&M team. Some international travel to CO offices and markets will be necessary.
The successful candidate can be based in either our London, Jersey, or Guernsey office.
Principal duties will include:
- Partner with the senior leadership team and BD Committee to co-create, own and communicate a global business development strategy that underpins the firm's growth objectives and targets
- Translate the global business development strategy into clear, actionable BD plans and initiatives for each of the firm's markets, sectors and practice areas
- Identify, evaluate and champion growth opportunities across markets, sectors and practice areas / products to drive new and increased revenue streams
- Design and lead new business strategies and intermediary targeting and relationship development initiatives to win new clients and strengthen / deepen existing relationships
- Lead the global business development team, fostering a high-performance culture and ensuring clear ownership and delivery of the strategic plan and initiatives
- With the Knowledge team, ensure a rolling programme of BD skills training
- With the MI team, establish and report against new business / referral / pipeline KPIs and metrics to ensure BD ROI
- Champion the use and optimisation of the firm’s CRM system to ensure effective data-driven business development
Team
- Lead and manage a team of 10-12 BD professionals globally
- Senior leadership role and part of the wider Business Development and Marketing Team
Experience and Professional Qualifications:
- Demonstrable experience in creating and driving law firm BD strategy and translating this into actionable and detailed business development plans that drive new business, revenue growth and increased market share
- Extensive experience working in an international law firm, gaining the trust and buy-in of partners and directors to achieve the BD strategy and plan
- Deep understanding and experience of international finance markets, in particular the US and UK legal markets
- Extensive experience in leadership and coaching of global business development teams
- Extensive personal network of BD / legal contacts at leading international law firms
- Honours degree preferably in business, finance, economics, marketing or law
- MBA or equivalent advanced business management qualification is highly preferred
- CIM or equivalent professional qualification desirable but not essential
- Active membership or engagement with relevant professional legal marketing networks and associations

- Presence, confidence and authority win the respect of the senior leadership team, partners and directors
- Comfortable navigating law firm partnerships, using consensus-building and persuasive communication to ensure buy-in, engagement and alignment
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects – often with competing time pressures
- Commercially minded, determined and focussed on achieving results
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable pitching ideas and presenting strategies and plans to the leadership team and wider partnership
- Strong team player, track record of building and sustaining effective internal and external working relationships across international offices and jurisdictions
