Tom Carey
Partner
Tom is Managing Partner of Carey Olsen's Guernsey office and partner in the corporate and finance group. He specialises in private equity and capital markets transactions and advises clients on the structuring and establishment of closed-ended and open-ended collective investment schemes as well as their resulting downstream transactions and financings. He also advises on public and private mergers, acquisitions and schemes of arrangement predominantly in the financial services space.
Tom acts for well known sponsors of private equity, large financial institutions and boutique and start up asset managers. He is also a director of a number of asset managers, private equity and venture capital funds.
Tom is consistently listed in the International Who's Who of Private Funds Lawyers.
Career
Tom began his career with a training contract at Norton Rose in 1998-2000. He qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in October 2000 and then joined the corporate finance team at Norton Rose in 2000-2002. He was in-house counsel at Morgan Stanley Investment Management Limited from 2002 to 2004. He joined Carey Olsen in August 2004 and was made partner in 2008. Tom was appointed Managing Partner of the Guernsey office in 2023.
Tom was a founder and first chairman of the Commercial Bar Association and was appointed as a non-voting member of the Board of Commerce & Employment within the States of Guernsey between 2012 and 2015.
Tom was Secretary and then Deputy Batonnier of the Guernsey Bar Council from 2012 to 2021.
Tom was elected as a member of the States Complaints Panel and Independent Review Board in 2021.
