Carey Olsen hailed as "the best non-UK law firm" by IFLR1000 with top tier rankings

Offshore global law firm Carey Olsen has had further industry recognition for its work in corporate and investment funds in the IFLR1000 2018 rankings, achieving top tier status across the board in the Channel Islands.

Carey Olsen, who attained top tier rankings in all 17 of its practice areas in the prestigious Legal 500 rankings earlier this month, has retained its top tier positions in Guernsey and Jersey in the financial and corporate and investment funds categories.

The International Financial Law Review 1000 (IFLR1000) rankings are a guide to the world's leading financial and corporate law firms and lawyers based on extensive independent research including interviews, client and competitor feedback and market analysis from the past 12 months.

The firm was described by clients as “hands-down the best non-UK law firm” and “the best corporate law firm in the Channel Islands” with its lawyers being singled out as “hardworking, tenacious and completely dedicated to getting the best outcome”.

Several noteworthy deals were highlighted in the guide including Carey Olsen’s involvement in Liberty Media Corporation’s successful acquisition of Formula One, the iconic global motorsports business, from a consortium of sellers led by CVC Capital Partners. The firm's advice to SoftBank on the establishment of its $90 billion SoftBank Vision Fund L.P., the world’s largest investment fund in Jersey, was also singled out for praise.

In Guernsey, the firm's advice for clients such as Macquarie Group, Park Square Capital Partners and Permira was also recognised, with lawyers from Carey Olsen having recently advised a Permira investment partnership on its acquisition of a strategic equity stake in Klarna Bank AB - one of Europe’s largest and fastest growing Fintech banks.

A total of 19 lawyers from Carey Olsen were ranked as leading lawyers, specified by the guide as individuals who have proved themselves to be among the leading figures in their respective market with a clear track record of innovative work.

These lawyers included partners Annette Alexander, Christopher Anderson, Andrew Boyce, Tom Carey, David Crosland, Natasha Kapp, Tony Lane and Ben Morgan in Guernsey, Guernsey consultant Graham Hall, Singapore counsel Andrew Tually, Jersey partners Guy Coltman, Peter German, Simon Marks, Robert Milner, James Mulholland, Daniel O’Connor, Alex Ohlsson and Robin Smith, and Jersey consultant Nicholas Crocker.

The guide also highlighted a number of ‘rising stars’ that are considered by the market to be the ‘leading lawyers’ of the future. Five lawyers from across the firm were recognised including partner James Willmott, counsel David Allen and counsel Christopher Griffin in Jersey and senior associates James Cooke and Alex Mauger in Guernsey.

Carey Olsen group managing partner, Alex Ohlsson, said: “We have maintained our position as a market leading law firm as demonstrated by our top tier position in IFLR1000, our recent clean sweep of tier one rankings in Legal 500 and our win as ‘Offshore Firm of The Year’ at The Lawyer Awards. These rankings reflect our strong offering in corporate and funds, the hard work and dedication of our lawyers and the excellent service we offer our clients.”
