Carey Olsen tops Chambers UK rankings

Carey Olsen has achieved top tier rankings in seven practices areas across the Channel Islands in the latest edition of Chambers UK, one of the world’s leading reference and ranking guides for the legal sector.

The guide praised the Guernsey dispute resolution team, elevated to Band 1 status, for its ‘market-leading advice on trust, fraud and commercial disputes’ and commended for its representation of the joint liquidators of four British Virgin Islands companies in Court of Appeal proceedings, following a £179 million judgment against former trustees of the Tchenguiz Discretionary Trust. The Jersey disputes team was singled out for its ‘formidable reputation for contentious trusts work, regularly acting for leading banks, financial institutions and individuals to assist with complex litigation.’

The corporate team in Guernsey was described as ‘a leading light for Guernsey corporate and finance matters,’ and praised for its work on behalf of Aviva, advising on its £5.6 billion acquisition of Friends Life Group.

The Jersey corporate team was praised for its ‘leading reputation for significant corporate matters, with considerable expertise in M&A, restructuring and IPOs’ and acclaimed for its ‘excellent capabilities in securitisation and structured financing transactions.’ The team was also cited for its work with the Sanne Group in connection with its IPO and placement on the main market of the LSE with a market capitalisation of £232 million on admission.

The guide highlighted Carey Olsen as ‘the leading firm for Guernsey trust work,’ and noted its capabilities in both contentious and non-contentious trust matters and private wealth management in both Guernsey and Jersey.

The firm was also ranked in Band 1 for its "leading" employment team in Jersey and its "distinguished" property team in Guernsey.

33 lawyers across the firm were recognised in the directory’s individual rankings, including 14 Guernsey partners and 13 Jersey partners.

Carey Olsen chairman, John Kelleher, said: “It is rewarding to see Carey Olsen once again achieving top tier rankings across our practice areas. These rankings demonstrate the expertise of our lawyers and the strong relationships we build with our clients and referrers, who we thank for their endorsements.”

The Chambers rankings follow the recent publication of the IFLR1000, Monterey, AIM, and Legal 500 UK where Carey Olsen was similarly awarded top tier status.
